Comanche County Memorial Hospital is offering a summer camp P.U.L.S.E. program for teenagers this summer. P.U.L.S.E. stands for Professionals Uniting with Learners in Science and Education.

This is a change to their annual volunteen program, which they offer every summer to introduce students to different career fields.

Heather Love, the administrative director of quality, safety, risk, and education at CCMH, said they know kids are busy with camps, so they wanted to change their program a bit this year.

“We wanted to try to get as many students as we could,” she said. “So we front-loaded it as a camp, and we doubled basically our numbers of participants by doing a camp up front.”

The camp, put on by the hospital and Southwest Area Health Education Center, has taught the students about nursing, therapy, infection control, CPR, the surgery department, and pharmacy just to name a few.

“It’s very interesting, and it’s very fun,” said camper Anila Polk. “Like, there’s a lot of stuff I didn’t know beforehand and it’s very interesting to hear about them and stuff.”

Each department that came in gave a presentation about career opportunities, the education needed, and how much someone in that field typically makes. After the presentation, the campers get to do a hands-on activity showing them a little more about that field.

Sarah Kay, the director of rehab services at CCMH, said she loves the activities.

“I love watching kids challenge themselves,” Kay said. “I love it when they have the confidence to volunteer with us and try the different activities that show them the different movements and muscle groups.”

“For right now, I like the emergency one, but I’m ready for tomorrow because it’s the surgeons and I want to be a surgeon,” said camper Courtney Crist.

Camper Trenton Hennessee said learning about radiology made him interested in possibly going into that field one day.

“Radiology, I like the x-rays and the CAT scans and all that and EMS, so like you get to actually go and help people whenever they’re hurt,” Hennessee said.

Those who went through the camp are able to volunteer at the hospital throughout the summer to learn more about the different areas they’re interested in.
